Highway Department

The Highway Department is responsible for:

Maintenance and reconstruction of 196.22 miles of County Roads
Maintenance and reconstruction of 74 County Bridges
Maintenance of all county vehicles
Maintenance and administration of Fuel Farm

This department works cooperatively with all Town and Village Highway Departments on many highway related projects.

Buildings And Grounds

The Buildings and Grounds Department is responsible for all maintenance on all County owned buildings and properties. This also includes boarding up and mowing lawns on all the In Rem tax properties in Orleans County.

Buildings and Grounds is very involved with the restoration of three of its buildings which are on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. This involves many months of studies, surveys and estimates to get 50% of the total cost reimbursed.

Our department is reimbursed by several departments through maintenance in lieu of rent (M.L.R.). Records of each of these building are kept and a report is compiled annually listing the amount owed to Buildings and Grounds from the State. We are also reimbursed a percentage from the Unified Court System for any maintenance done on the Courthouse. All of this involves a lot of reports and record keeping.
