The Environmental Division of the Orleans County Health Department is responsible for providing regulatory and educational services in order to maintain safety and sanitation within the community.
What we do...
Rabies Prevention Program provides:
- Quarterly, free rabies vaccine for dogs, cats and ferrets. (see Rabies Clinic Schedule by clicking here)
- Animal Bites and Rabies Control includes investigating all bites involving domesticated, stray and wild animals. Bites are to be reported for follow-up investigations and testing of animals involved as needed. Call 589-3278 during business hours or 589-5527 after hours.

Lead - Staff can sample paint, soil or water to identify if there is lead.
- Lead is a poison that especially harms babies, children and pregnant women causing illness, developmental delays and permanent organ damage if not diagnosed early.

Radon - Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that can seep into the basement of homes in high risk areas.
- Radon test kits are available for a nominal fee.

Food Protection 
- Permits for food preparation and sale to the general public for forms and instructions click the Forms and Instructions link under the Public Health sub-menu.
- Conducts routine inspections.
- Responds to complaints.
- Assesses levels of risk at food service establishments, temporary food stands and carnival stands.

- Conducts inspections of individual water supplies
- Provides 2 free Well Water testings per year

Septic System Permits / Inspectionfor applications click Forms and Instructions link)
- Permits and inspections are done when new construction is planned, homes are sold (as requested by lending agency) or repairs/upgrades are needed on existing septic systems according to the Orleans County Sanitary Code in compliance with New York State codes.
