The Historian collects and preserves historical materials, legends and facts of this region. The Historian speaks, teaches, writes and photographs subjects of historical interest, using all media to educate the public. He assists other departments, the public and students in the preservation and research of local history. He encourages Tourism by building appreciation of local historical assets, both within and outside the community, as well as working toward the preservation of local art and architecture.
The County Historian provides a weekly history column published in the local newspapers. Likewise, the historian is available to lecture and speak on local history to both civic and student groups. Preparation and delivery consume a fair amount of time in this cause. Often the Historian is asked to act as a consultant with individuals and agencies. The Department of History arranges for tours of local cemeteries and annually erects an historic marker. The County Historian has to his credit two books: Architecture Destroyed in Orleans County, 1984 (out of print) and Luminaries in the Firmament - a Guide to Stained Glass Windows in Orleans County, 1992.
