Emergency Management Office

The main purpose of the EOC and its staff is to focus efforts and resources of a wide range, with officials, agencies and organizations on the development of an effective disaster preparedness plan and the response capabilities of the community.
In a disaster, the emergency manager serves as the key representative and advisor to the County Chief Administrative Officer. In smaller counties, such as Orleans, emergency management duties are assigned to coordinators who combine the functions with other responsibilities such as Fire and Emergency Medical Service Coordinator.

Also under the direction of the Emergency Manager are the Auxiliary Police, Amateur Radio Club and the Underwater Task Force which are all volunteer organizations.

Another involvement of EOC is the YFIRE program in Orleans County. The Youth Fire Intervention Response Education (YFIRE) program is an intervention program to help children under 16 years of age involved in arson or other fire setting problems.

The EOC is also activated as the back-up communications center for the 800 megahertz radio system and E-911 system should the main dispatch center fail/malfunction. A part-time Radio System Manager is available through the EOC to assist with any radio problems and for training / operational procedures.
