Job Development History
Important Information About Us...
Besides providing training and employment experience
opportunities to eligible adults and youth, the Job Development Agency operates the local
Social Service "Welfare-to-Work" programs and offers School-to-Work activities
with all of the county school districts and the Orleans County Business/Education Council.
The director, James Hancock, and his staff
participate on several councils or committees throughout the county in effort to
coordinate (and not duplicate) their services with other county or non-county agencies.
During 1996, our office served over 400
residents who were in need of employment and training services, including:
- almost 260 dislocated Fisher Price employees,
- of which 97 participants completed training programs,
- of which 74 obtained employment at an average wage of $7.63/hour.
- This represents a 76% placement rate.

 |
We also saw some very positive results in our
Welfare-to-Work program dealing with public assistance recipients.
- Almost 500 public assistance applicants/ recipients were served.
- Approximately 50% of the applicants who applied for assistance,
who went through our workshop that addresses employment seeking skills didn't have
their case opened.
- During 1996, our department assisted approximately 260
applicants/recipients find employment which caused their cases to be
closed or greatly reduced.

| We operate a Summer Youth Employment Program that
hires 70-150 youth during the summer. These participants also receive educational and
employment counseling services. Some participate in employment and career exploration
workshops and may participate in training or after school work experiences. |
